It’s not often that I get to name drop because I’m a somewhat obscure progressive theologian who lives and writes in a small Pennsylvania city. That said though, I am lucky enough to be friends with the brilliant, multi-award winning author A.S. King. Her novels take on some of the most important issues of our day such as white supremacy, fascism and authoritarianism, transphobia and homophobia, patriarchy, spousal abuse, teen rights, literacy, and book banning. King is incredibly intellectually curious and despite not being a Christian, sees the importance of theology because faith impacts the lives of believers and non-believers alike both culturally, and politically. In other words, even atheists should see the importance of theology and be intellectually curious enough to see what progressive theologians have to say about contemporary issues such as white supremacy, anti-LGBTQIA bigotry, climate change, history, fascism, etc. With that in mind, be like A.S. King, read theology, and speak up for the marginalized.
